Rare Whale Sighting in Plett Waters Leaves Experts Astounded
A recent marine sighting off the coast of Plettenberg Bay has captured the attention of leading South African marine mammal scientists, who believe the animal may be a Pygmy Right Whale — an exceptionally rare species in this region. Fewer than a handful of confirmed sightings have ever been recorded in these waters.
Pygmy Right Whales are elusive and often mistaken for sharks due to their streamlined, torpedo-like bodies, small triangular pectoral fins, and impressive ability to hold their breath for extended periods. It’s little wonder that initial observers were misled by this rare appearance.
If you were fortunate enough to witness or film this whale, we encourage you to share your sightings. Every piece of data contributes to vital research and ongoing conservation work.
