Qolweni riot suspects to appear in court
The four suspects arrested in connection with the recent Qolweni riots are scheduled to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 15 October.
Police spokesman Sergeant Christopher Spies said that the four suspects, between the ages of 32 and 40, were arrested on 8 October in connection with incidents of public violence which erupted on the N2 near Qolweni.
The suspects appeared in court on 12 October and the matter was postponed to 15 October.
The four were remanded in custody.
The riots were sparked by unhappiness about the Qolweni housing project and saw the N2 in Plettenberg Bay between the Shell garage and Kwanokuthula, being blocked by protestors for five days.
Spies said that while the national road had been reopened, public order police would remain on the scene to monitor the situation.
“These forces will remain on the ground until order is restored,” Spies said.
