Plett’s Airport Road upgraded
Work on the long-awaited upgrade of Plettenberg Bay’s Airport Road has reached the halfway mark.
Spokesman for the Western Cape department of transport and public works Byron la Hoe said the R76-million project was progressing well.
It was started in October 2015 and includes the upgrade of the gravel section of Airport Road between the N2 and Kranshoek to be a surfaced road.
La Hoe said they expected the project to be completed early 2017.
“The road is currently closed to through traffic, although local businesses and residents have had access. The project is progressing well and about half of the road has already been surfaced. The fill and layer works for the remaining portion of the project are at an advanced stage,” La Hoe said.
He added all invasive alien vegetation had been removed from the road reserve and rehabilitation of the areas disturbed by construction had commenced.
“Topsoiling and re-vegetation is under way. The new culvert to accommodate the Piesang River, which used to regularly flow over the old gravel road, has also been completed.”
La Hoe said that in spite delays caused by heavy rain in the area, the contractor was still on schedule.
“Some delays are inevitable. However, the department designs and manages roadworks projects in such a way that inconvenience to road users is minimised.”
He added that it was expected that the road would be open to public traffic early during the December holiday period.
“Access from Plettenberg Bay to the N2 via Airport Road will be improved once the project is complete.”
