Plett women make mask of the situation
What started out as a way around the logistics of getting locals equipped with masks following the outbreak of Covid-19, has turned into a massive production in Plettenberg Bay, in hopes to see all residents donning these.
Local resident Wayne Abroue said he wanted to order some masks from a supplier beyond the town’s borders and posted a message on his Facebook page asking if anyone would be willing to share in courier costs. “Before I knew it, I had 50 replies and as they say, the rest is history,” Abroue said.
He said five Kranshoek women came forward and offered to make masks. These are washable, double-layered polycotton masks ranging from plain fabric to “funky designs”.
After working nonstop for more than a week, the women have made more than 2 000 of these masks.
The demand has increased to such an extent that the group of five had to be increased and now about 20 women from the Plett community have come on board.
“There has also been interesting in supplying our vulnerable residents with masks, so at this stage, we are aiming to make about 50 000 units to be distributed.”
A fundraising initiative has been launched to make this happen.
“The initiative has not been without challenges. During these uncertain times, sourcing material has been very difficult. The first masks were made with elastic to secure the mask to the wearer’s face, but we have been unable to find more elastic. The women have been very innovative and have started using a lining to make strings so that the wearer can fasten it at the back,” Abroue said.
Just this week they supplied 200 masks for the elderly depending on public transport to pick up their social grants. “One of our community members, who owns a transport company, offered to transport them on buses at no cost. Before they got on the buses, we gave each a mask.”
The women have ensured that all police officers are equipped with masks and most security companies have also placed their orders.
The women who are sewing the masks are paid for their labour. “We supply all the materials needed.”
The masks are being sold for R100 for a pack of five.
