Bitou Mayor Dave Swart welcomed SA Military Academy students to Plettenberg Bay when they stopped here on 29 November as part of their annual Trans Enduro journey.
Plett was once again a pit stop for South Africa’s Military Academy students undertaking their annual Trans Enduro event.
Over and above testing their fitness and endurance, students make a difference in the communities along their way and this was also the case in Plettenberg Bay on Monday 29 November, raising funds and doing community service in the towns they visit.
This year the academy’s Masiza programme focuses on senior citizens and early childhood development.

In Plettenberg Bay the newly elected mayor, Dave Swart, welcomed the students and handed over a letter for them to take to George.
Municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu said, as part of their community outreach programme for Plett, the team provided much-needed assistance to Plett Meal Centre in Bossiesgif as well as Emanuel Educare in Kwanokuthula.

The team also did fundraising in the town’s streets and these funds will go towards their community outreach programmes.
“We have requested application forms to be made available to the Bitou Municipality to assist with recruiting youngsters who want to join the military. The requirements are a Grade 12 certificate for youngsters younger than 23 years old,” Namntu said.
He said those aged 23 up to 27 years would only be considered if they had a tertiary qualification.
“Once these forms are available, the Bitou Municipality will ensure that it is communicated accordingly.”
The students started their journey in Gqeberha on 26 November and will end in Saldanha on 4 December.

The event was born in 1982 and has evolved into a journey that involves nine teams competing in endurance events on land – which includes cycling and running up to 50km a day – and sea. They are however not tackling this gruelling endeavour alone and have specialist support teams looking after them.
