One in 66 Million: South Africa’s Rarest R2 Coin
A rare 1989 South African R2 coin has surfaced in Plettenberg Bay, discovered by veteran numismatist John Mulder. The coin is extraordinary because it was overstruck on a 10c nickel coin—nine years after the 10c went out of production. Its rarity is estimated at one in 66 million, making it one of the most elusive pieces in South African numismatics.
Mulder, who found the coin decades ago while treasure hunting with a metal detector, only recently realized its potential value after seeing the record sale of the 1898 “single 9 overstrike Krugerpond” for R41 million. The South African Mint even sent officials to verify the coin’s authenticity. Mulder now hopes to test the market, believing this coin could become a collector’s ultimate dream.
