Besides the fact that Winter has been deferred (till when we wonder), we have great news regards our Community Project Program – and all because of YOU!
Community Project Program:
Rotary Anns (Plett chapter) requested assistance about 6 weeks ago – their aim was to supply every child at Harkerville Premier (primary school) with a maroon beanie for Winter – 250 required. And thanks to each and every one of you who contributed, we handed over just around 270 beanies last week!! So many ladies went above and beyond the call and knitted numerous beanies for this worthy cause. Too many to mention individually but we were blown away. And for every two beanies handed in, Rotary Anns and wool&more gave a ball of Charity dk yarn (colour of your choice) as a gift of thanks.
Yvonne sent in 24 beanies (wow!) and we even had parcels of beanies sent from Mossel Bay and Cape Town (thanks Sandra and Jenny, respectively, for supporting our town’s folk).
Huge appreciation to everyone – a great outcome for such a worthy cause. We are hoping that Rotary Anns will send us photos of the hand-over of the beanies so that we can share with you.
Besides the beanies, we also have supplied woollie goods to the following worthwhile places of need as requested by them:
Sunshine Centre in Crags (blankets for the animals in their care)
Ericaville and Reesa Frail care centres in Plett – blankets, beanies and bedsocks (thanks Yvette for all you do for those elderly folk) and thank you for the photos you sent of some of the blankies being used – very appreciated.
Monique Foiret who gave baby jerseys* to all the new moms on Mother’s Day at Knysna Hospital (which is where our local ladies go to give birth) – what a special gesture.
Beanies and jerseys for the kids at Flamingo Creche (Wittedrift)
A large bag of yarn for the ladies at Protea Care Elderly Centre in Kranshoek
A large bag of baby jerseys to New Horizon clinic for new moms*
… the list goes on and on. And All these items which will help so many folks keep warm this Winter came from YOU. Massive gratitude to everyone who has contributed. Please keep up the awesome ” work”!!
* The lady in Perth, Australia, who is over 80 years old, again sent us a large bag of knitted baby jerseys. Thanks to Stefan and Marinda (ex Plett) who kindly bring this massive bag of knitted goodies to us when they visit from Oz – you are all very appreciated.
Whilst wool&more looks a lot emptier with most of the bags of blankets, etc gone, remember that Winter will come and we will need more items, mainly blankets, to be able to meet demands for warmth. If you still have the energy/desire to knit or crochet blankets (for babies and adults), please do so. (See pattern below which is easy to do and adjust to suit yarn, size, etc!)
Crochet Corner:
If anyone feels able and willing to give some crochet lessons (and maybe some workshops on specific patterns/projects), please do contact us. This is not a full-time position but basically an opportunity for “self-employment” in partnership with wool&more.
Knitting:
So many of us hate the picking up and knitting of the bands on cardigans. A while ago, Annette H told us about doing the band as part of the front of the cardigan so that there are no picking up of stitches at the end. After forgetting about the process for a while, I decided to try it out …. and it works beautifully!
Here are the basic instructions:
Cast on, for the fronts, an additional 11 stitches on left and right sides (bands inside of fronts).
The right side of cardigan for the 11 additional stitches (then revert to rib or pattern as required)
Row 1: K2, (p1,k1)* to last stitch, k1
Row 2: K1, (p1, k1)* to end
The left side of cardigan: as above but start with Row 2.
Remember to do your buttonholes on this band – the One Row Buttonhole pattern works very well. And for a v-neck, once you start decreasing at neck end for V shaping, put those 11 stitches onto a stitch holder and when the garment is complete, continue knitting the band to the required length, sew onto the garment and join at the back of the neck.
For a baby cardigan, cast on 9 stitches.
Hope you find this useful.
A lovely blanket pattern called Textured Blanket is below – alter for sizing, and use any thickness of yarn (with suitable needles).
TEXTURED BLANKET
Finished blanket approx. 105cm wide x 145cm long and will use approx. 1,2 kg yarn using Aran weight yarn and 6mm circular needles. Can be adjusted using double knit or chunky yarn, to suit.
Cast on 184 st loosely (or use a bigger needle for cast on / cast off rows)
Knit in garter st, 16 rows (border) **
Pattern: knit first and last 12 st in garter st in every row then follow the pattern as follows:
Rows 1, 3, 5: K12 (border), K3, (p2, k2)* Repeat * to last 13 st, k1, k12 (border)
Rows 2, 4, 6: K12 (border) P3, (k2, p2)* Repeat * to last 13 st, p1, k12 (border)
Rows 7, 9, 11: K12 (border) K1, (p2, k2)* Repeat * to last 15 st, p2, k1, k12 (border)
Rows 8, 10, 12: K12 (border), P1, (k2, p2)* Repeat * to last 15 st, K2, p1, k12 (border)
Repeat the above 12 rows (pattern) 20 times (or more depending on sizing required)
Knit in garter st, 16 rows (border)
Cast off loosely.
** Can also use moss stitch as a border all around the blanket.
This pattern is easy to reduce in size for a smaller blanket or even make a scarf.
A small swatch of the Textured Blanket as an example – and it’s fully reversible (my best!!)
Sassy is a new textured yarn from elle (en route to wool&more. The link below is a cute teddy pattern, knitted in Sassy (a Mirage product).

B Y O B: Reminder!
Please remember that we are working to get less plastic into the environment – we ask that you please remember to Bring Your Own Bags (BYOB) when shopping at wool&more (and elsewhere)…. lovely re-usable fabric bags are the answer and help so much. Points to Ponder:
• Do twins ever realize that one of them is unplanned
• What if my dog only brings back my ball because he thinks I like throwing it?
• If poison expires is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous?
• Which letter is silent in the word “Scent,” the S or the C?
• Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn’t it be called double V?
• Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and it just takes 75-100 years to fully work.
• Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty.
• The word “swims” upside-down is still “swims”.
• Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper, and scissors is just as hard as trying to win.
• 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.
• Your future self is watching you right now through memories.
• The doctors that told Stephen Hawking he had two years to live in 1953 are probably dead.
• If you replace “W” with “T” in “What, Where and When”, you get the answer to each of them.
• Many animals probably need glasses, but nobody knows it.
• If you rip a hole in a net, there are actually fewer holes in it than there were before.
• If 2/2/22 falls on a Tuesday, we’ll just call it “2’s Day”. (It does fall on a Tuesday)
• 100 years ago a Twenty Dollar bill and a Twenty Dollar gold piece were interchangeable.
Either one would buy a new suit, new shoes and a night on the town. The Twenty Dollar gold piece will still do that.
