Finally, we had a few days of Winter – woohoo!! And it’s almost time for Spring to be rolling in! This Newsletter will be short and sweet but with some patterns and ideas (and a great Crochet workshop to hurry and book for)!
Community Project Program:
Whilst there still ought to be some very cold weather coming in, please do keep the blankets rolling – a guideline on size would be around 1,1m x 1,5m for adults and around 90cm x 1,2m for babies/kids. This really is a guide only – so bigger and slightly smaller would be fine too. Any colours, any patterns, knitted or crocheted – your choice as to how to make a difference to someone! Thanks in advance – very appreciated.
A number of blankets found their way to needy communities and are always needed for the crisis centre in town. A large bag of infant clothing and baby blankets is going to Yvonne Samuel who, through the various clinics, will be given to infants in need (and there are many, sadly).
We would also like to assist various creches in need with jerseys – we have a very easy pattern which uses just under 100gm of double knit yarn (or for smaller sizes, use 4ply and for larger sizes, of course, use chunky yarn). We worked the prototype on circular needles to accommodate both, front and back pieces, simultaneously which was so quick to do. Please knit some of these to bring into wool&more so that we can hand them to those who need them most. This will be an ongoing requirement for the many creches and a great way to use your stash or to get some bargain yarn from our Reduced Bins!
SIMPLE TODDLER JERSEY
Using DK yarn and 4,5mm needles: Front and back worked the same (2 pieces – works well knitting both sides simultaneously on a circular needle though not essential). Two sizes (approx. 2-3-year-old and 4-5 year old)
Cast on 50 / 70 st loosely
Knit 8 / 10 rows single rib
Knit 38 / 50 rows stocking stitch ending with wrong side row
Next 2 rows:
*K1, incr into second st, knit to last 2 st, increase into second last st, k1
*Purl next row
Repeat above two rows * 4 more times (8 rows) = 60 / 80 st
Cast on 20 / 25 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows = 100 / 130 st
Knit 28 / 38 rows stocking stitch
Cast off 32 / 40 st at beginning of next 2 rows = 36 / 50 st
Knit 8 / 10 rows single rib on remaining stitches for the neck.
Cast off neck ribwise, using slightly larger needles.
Join top of sleeve and neck seams.
Pick up 30 / 40 stitches at each wrist and work 8 / 10 rows single rib.
Cast off cuffs and sew up side seams and underside of sleeves.
Work in loose yarn.
*Add stripes or patterns where desired.
Crochet Corner:
A reminder that we now offer private crochet lessons for beginners and intermediate levels.
Please do contact us and we will arrange for a lesson for you at wool&more. Duration of each lesson is 1,5 hours and by appointment only. Please call and book your lesson/s today.
Crochet Workshop – Celtic Weave square: Only 3 more spots available – Book Now!
On Friday 27th July 2018, we will be holding a fun morning where Omega will be showing you all you need to know about this amazing and different square called Celtic Weave! The workshop will run from 9.30am (registration at 9.15 at wool&more) to 1.00pm in a friendly “coffee shop” environment and will include refreshments, instruction and full printed pattern/instruction details. The sampler below was done in Eco Fusion as a four-ply. You are welcome to bring your own materials – four colours of yarn and your crochet hooks or purchase from wool&more prior to the workshop (the Eco Fusion is so soft and being a blend of cotton and bamboo, has a delightful sheen and luxurious drape).
Please note that this workshop is for intermediate level crochet folk only – not beginners (ie: must have a basic knowledge of crochet techniques and stitches). If you are a beginner and would like to attend the workshop, please do hurry and book a couple of private lessons prior to the workshop date.
Price for this delightful, informative morning will be R365-00 per delegate.
Numbers are limited so please secure your booking by paying at wool&more very soon!
Elle yarns newest CAL is proving to be very popular – get the patterns from elleyarns.com. They have called it Vinta-licious because they are using their new Family Knit Vintage DK collection of colours (available at wool&more, of course!). Any other double knit would be suitable too. Get started with yours – and if you need any assistance with any of the squares, we can contact Omega for her help!!
Carle from Nurturing Fibres recently visited Russia (lucky lady) and has had a crochet shopping bag designed and has generously shared it with us. It’s a great idea to make a few for your own shopping and for gifts – leave those horrid plastic bags out of your life and our environment.
Nurturing Fibres has some delightful Free patterns on their website – please do have a look and try some of them out – we would love to hear how they turned out. The range of their Eco Cotton and Eco Fusion is very substantial at wool&more so please pop in to see (and feel)!

Knitting:
Sadly, the kids’ knitting lessons for the school holidays didn’t even leave the starting gate – a big disappointment but we tried.
We have some good quality wooden clothes hangers available and a really easy and inexpensive knitted method to cover them – great for your clothes and makes a super gift!! Maybe start getting a few sets done for inexpensive Christmas gifts – always well received!
Our Blanket-in-a-Bag kits are more and more popular – the finished blanket is approximately 1,2m x 1,7m, it’s so easy and such fun to knit and even a beginner would complete a stunning blanket!! Each one is unique and they are always available at wool&more – if you would like your own colour scheme, we will happily pack a bag just for you!! Yarn, needles and instructions are included – Ready To Go!! Warning: it is highly addictive to do!!! We have a sample at the shop for you to see – get yours (and your moms-in-law, sisters, employees kit) today!!
Massive Stock to Clear:
Whilst no new yarns have recently come in, we have been very busy “culling” discontinued and redundant stock so the pile in the Reduced Bins is enormous! And growing daily – please do pop in to get some fantastic bargains – all at cost or below!!
