Wool&more – June 2014 Newsletter
I believe that it’s safe to say “Welcome Winter” now! And it’s really not too late to get cracking with knitting and crocheting sweaters, scarves, gloves, socks, blankets, etc.
Which means that it’s a perfect time for me to introduce our Special for June:
Buy any five balls of Elle 100gm unprinted double knit Pullskein and get a ball of Charity 100gm double knit … absolutely FREE!
This offer began on Wednesday 18th June and ends on Saturday 5th July 2014.
(Please note that the Specials are not included in the Loyalty Card program).
And now, a VERY IMPORTANT announcement: We have just launched our latest Community Project Program:
We would like all the local ladies (from Plett, Knysna, Sedgefield, and surrounds) to pop in to help us knit really warm scarves for those in need, in Plett. We at wool&more will provide the yarn and needles for instore knitting and we request that you spend 67 minutes, or more (for Mandela Day) in the shop, knitting a scarf, or part thereof. Each scarf will be knitted with three strands of yarn and we would like everyone to name the three best qualities Madiba shared with us, in your opinion. Those three values will be written onto cotton tape and stitched onto the scarf for the recipient to have (and hopefully be inspired by!). There will also be three charity boxes for you to choose from to put your donation into (totally voluntary, of course). Please help us to make this a very successful project and to help keep some cold folk a little warmer this winter. The scarves will be distributed before the end of July 2014. For those of you “out of town” ladies who would like to contribute: please use 3 strands of double knit (any colours you desire), cast on 12 stitches using 9mm or 10mm needles and knit (garter st) 1,3 metres. Then send to us to reach us before 18th July (Mandela Day).
So please let’s get cracking with this great initiative!
The books, “Friday Night Knitting Club” and its sequel, “Knit Two” have just arrived at wool&more and are for sale – great reads so get yours soon!. Some wonderful pattern books (knitting and crocheting) have also just arrived – they are full of fabulous patterns and overflowing with inspiring ideas. When you come in, remember to have a look at them and grab one to take home with you.
Here is another excerpt from the novel, “Friday Night Knitting Club” by Kate Jacobs:
“Starting Again
Every knitter has a sweater left unfinished; the bags of bits and pieces stashed away and never picked up again. And why? A change in fashion? A change in season? If that was so, you’d just pull out the stitches and use the yarn for something new. No, there’s a secret hope that makes you hold on, to dream that you’ll get it right someday, that you’ll go back and take it up again and it will finally come out right. That this time all the pieces will fit. The mistake is waiting until you feel renewed enough to give it another try. You simply have to pick up the needles and keep at it anyway.”
I believe that one of the main reasons why we often have those unfinished items lying around (mostly tucked out of sight in a cupboard but ever present in our minds) is to do with our self confidence. Perhaps we just don’t believe in ourselves enough to know that we can fix the mistake or pull the whole thing out (aka “tink”) and begin again without whipping ourselves for our “failure”! So much judgement of self! Let’s be easier on ourselves, more forgiving, more loving and much more open to our creativity! What do you think?
Our little mini-contest in May to name the “stitch-with-the-aweful-name” was fun and well entered into. So without further ado, the winner as chosen by 3 knitters is…
Leon Meyer of Plett
Well done, Leon! The name he suggested was LATTICE STITCH! We felt it was a perfect name for a delightful stitch! Please come in to collect your gift voucher when you are able. And for the rest of the entrants, thank you all so much for scratching your heads and coming up with some delightful and imaginative names! Hope you had a good giggle about it too, and tried the Lattice Stitch.
I tried its “sister” stitch (no name found so perhaps it should be called Purl Lattice?) being simply p2tog, yo, p2tog, yo repeating until last stitch then yo, p1 (with an uneven number of stitches cast on). No other rows between … just that. It looks so different to our Lattice Stitch yet is so similar in the written pattern.
Vinni’s Yarn has just launched their first pattern range, which has arrived at wool&more so the general selection of patterns has grown and is continuing to do so … there are many more Elle patterns, and others from Katia (in Spain), Stylecraft (from England) and our own African Expression range (from the Eastern Cape).
Reminder: Book for your sock knitting (next lesson Thursday 3rd July 10h30 – 12h30) and / or crochet classes with us at wool&more!
This cartoon is so cute and depicts what most husbands are heard to mutter (just softly enough to say “nothing dear” when asked “what did you say?”).
Please remember our trading times: We are open from Monday to Friday from 10h00 to 16h00 and every first and last Saturday of each month from 09h30 to 12h30.
Any time you would like to come and sit in our sunny corner and have some coffee or tea with delicious biscotti (which we stock), please do so. And get your 67 minutes for Mandela day done here too! It’s truly a relaxing and inspiring place to be!
Take care, keep warm and allow your creative juices to flow with abandon!
Until next time, bye for now.
