– New yarns – Nurturing Fibres and Stylecraft
– Times for Trading – Please take note!
Life has returned to the normal sleepy Plett pace…. Our visitors had a wonderful time with so many activities and incredibly good weather (unusual for December)…. we do hope they got home with renewed vigour and will come back to visit in the near future.
As yet, neither my home nor wool&more have been sold so I am firmly at the helm and hope to see you all really soon. Am already placing orders for the Winter range so watch this space…!
Community Project Program:
We have had, just this week, two urgent appeals for assistance:
Yvette, who is very involved with the community on a number of important projects, has asked us for jerseys and beanies specifically for the VEP (Victim Empowerment Program) …. this is the “first stop” for victims of Rape in our community, where they get counselling, clean clothes, guidance at the police station during the reporting procedure, etc. Most often, the victims are at the VEP centre late at night, and most often, are cold and shocked. On asking what ages we should try and get jerseys for, she said “from 4 to about 13 years old”!! I wanted to weep.
After some discussion, we felt that jerseys may not be ideal (although would be very welcome) and so we have decided on an easier and quicker option: ponchos – they are comfortable, warm and will fit a few sizes – and easier for you to knit or crochet.
Whilst we already do supply them with blankets (very gratefully received), we would really like to assist with these ponchos.
Below, we have some ideas for a poncho – although any easy pattern will be very welcome – as always, any yarn, colour, etc can be used and will be appreciated.
The easiest poncho patterns are normally two large squares or a long rectangle sewn together – many patterns are available. We have a sample poncho at wool&more which comprises four large squares sewn together in an L shape then joined per the diagram below (apologies – not very clear). Sizes of squares: from approximately 30cm to 42cm each. For the neck, one could pick up stitches (for the larger size poncho, around 110st and adjust for smaller sizes) and using a larger needle, knit a loose rib cowl type collar (approx 12 / 15cm long) and remember to cast off loosely. Or just crochet a neckline that will fit comfortably and be soft to wear.
Please do also let us have beanies…. any sizes, any colours…. Winter is coming and they will all find a cold head to warm. As mentioned earlier, Yvette would like to have some as well.
Celia assists Buyiswa who runs a creche called Home of Angels in Kwano (a township as you enter Plett). Buyiswa has around 47 children: infants to 5 year olds and would really like to have some blankets for the kids before Winter does arrive. Please keep blankies rolling in: as always, any size, any colours and designs are very welcome. For the little ones, around 90cm x 120cm (very approximately) would be great … or bigger for the bigger kids. We are hoping to be able to let her have 50 blankets in total before end of February 2019.
Knitted Knockers: thanks again to all who have contributed to help make some available – we have already provided a few to ladies in need. If you feel like knitting more, they will be welcomed.
Crochet:
These look like fun to try …. sandals, whilst summer is still here. Let me know how you get along with them!

“…But My Yarn Is In Meters! How much do I need?”
To convert yards to meters: Meters = yards X 0.9144
To convert meters to yards: Yards = meters X 1.0936
To convert grams to ounces: Ounces = Grams X 0.035
To convert ounces to grams: Grams = Ounces X 28.57
The above may be useful in so many ways – hope it makes your creating life just a little easier! It ought to be on an excel chart – maybe we will get that done and publish for you….!
New Yarns:
We are hoping to see and order the new Katia and Saprotex (elle yarns) ranges later this month.
We have just ordered the new Stylecraft Colour Pool range because we love their patterns so much!! They ought to be arriving within a week – just unpacked yesterday at the importers. Below, see the link to what they look like and some delightful patterns! Click here for patterns.
Nurturing Fibres (one of my favourites, as you know by now!) have just launched a wonderful soft range called Lush – as mentioned last month. It works as a 4 ply yarn (200m per 50gm ball) and comprises 60% cotton and 40% bamboo. We have had a couple of samples which have worked up very well and now we are waiting for their new colour chart so that we can order. A spot on our shelves is already empty (a miracle – some Katia cottons had to be jettisoned to the Specials Bin) and waiting…..
