Woman’s Day rolls around again – we are sending this newsletter a week earlier than usual just so that our wishes for a great day, a great month and a great Life reaches you. Whilst I personally feel that Woman’s Month (and Day) are more commercial ploys, I do feel that women ought to be acknowledged and recognised for their strength, nurturing and leadership in our society. So I feel grateful for the awareness that the hype creates. Hopefully, some men WILL change their attitude toward us.
Times for trading:
Monday to Friday: from 10h00 to 16h00 except for Public Holidays which are from 09h30 to 12h30
Saturdays: We will be OPEN EVERY Saturday from 09h30 to 12h30 and all public holidays until the end of August for your convenience.
From the beginning of September, we will once again revert to Every First and Last Saturday of each month to trade (and all Public Holidays) from 09h30 to 12h30. Please diarise.
We close for a break for approximately two weeks every October: this year, we will be closing from Wednesday 10th October and re-opening (probably, to be confirmed) on Thursday 26th October.
Community Project Program:
We had so many folks needing blankets and other items this past month:
St Thomas Methodist church received a bag of blankets lovingly made by you special ladies and they have sent us a letter of appreciation. The letter is here for anyone who would like to read it.
Yvonne Samuel collected baby blankets, beanies and jerseys to be given to expectant mothers in various townships as part of a program of education. This will be an ongoing requirement so any baby items (newborn to 2-year-olds, preferably) would be very appreciated.
Seeff Properties collected a large bag of blankets for their Keep Warm drive – they have sent a card to thank you all for your contributions which are on display at wool&more.
Hospice Plett has collected many blankets and beanies and will continue to do so as they come in – thanks for your help, Carol. We attach a letter of thanks from Hospice – see below:

wool&more donation
Dear Joy
Please accept our sincere thanks for your very kind donation of beautifully crocheted blankets, caps, scarves and gloves which you so generously made to The PlettAid Foundation through wool&more. As an NPO we are incredibly appreciative of charitable donations from benefactors and value your support.
We administer care to approximately 125 patients monthly and test 6 000 people annually for chronic and preventable illnesses through our Wellness Programme. It costs Hospice Plett R750 per community member with whom we interact, 98% of our patients are from indigent communities. Our service is free but there are so many people across the board in all walks of life that we are not reaching. We are wholly dependent on the goodwill of our community and donors like yourself. Your help will enable us to reach more patients in need and help us to continue in our mission to uplift the quality of life in the Bitou community by promoting health and wellbeing and by providing dignity in death for the terminally ill.
If you would like to receive a Tax 18A certificate for tax relief, please send me the value of the goods as well as your physical address.
We thank you once again for your generosity.
Warm regards
Sister Cecily van Heerden

Reminder from last month (with pattern):
We would also like to assist various creches in need of jerseys – we have a very easy pattern which uses just under 100gm of double knit yarn (or for smaller sizes, use 4ply and for larger sizes, of course, use chunky yarn). We worked the prototype on circular needles to accommodate both, front and back pieces, simultaneously which was so quick to do (but not necessary). Please knit some of these to bring into wool&more so that we can hand them to those who need them most. This will be an ongoing requirement for the many creches and a great way to use your stash or to get some bargain yarn from our Reduced Bins!
SIMPLE TODDLER JERSEY
Using DK yarn and 4,5mm needles: Front and back worked the same (2 pieces – works well knitting both sides simultaneously on a circular needle though not essential). Two sizes (approx. 2-3-year-old and 4-5 year old)
Cast on 50 / 70 st loosely
Knit 8 / 10 rows single rib
Knit 38 / 50 rows stocking stitch ending with wrong side row
Next 2 rows:
*K1, incr into second st, knit to last 2 st, increase into second last st, k1
*Purl next row
Repeat above two rows * 4 more times (8 rows) = 60 / 80 st
Cast on 20 / 25 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows = 100 / 130 st
Knit 28 / 38 rows stocking stitch
Cast off 32 / 40 st at beginning of next 2 rows = 36 / 50 st
Knit 8 / 10 rows single rib on remaining stitches for the neck.
Cast off neck ribwise, using slightly larger needles.
Join top of sleeve and neck seams.
Pick up 30 / 40 stitches at each wrist and work 8 / 10 rows single rib.
Cast off cuffs and sew up side seams and underside of sleeves.
Work in loose yarn.
*Add stripes or patterns where desired.
Huge shoutout to Averil for constructing blankets from squares and strips we had – a real labour of love!! Also to Nina in Knysna who popped in very briefly with a Large bag of colourful beanies which will be off to Hospice soon, and to Wendy in PE who sent down a big bag of maroon beanies which will help to top up the need at Harkerville Primary. Sandra also brought in some very colourful blankets for which she used yarn bought in Australia!
Everyone who contributes is so VERY appreciated. Keep up the good work.
PLEASE HELP US TO HELP OTHERS: We have had an ongoing need for knitted “knockers” which are really soft and comfortable breast prostheses for ladies who have had mastectomies. How this excellent concept works is that you buy a kit (with the pattern, yarn and stuffing), knit a pair of knockers and pop them back into wool&more. We are the distribution centre for knockers which are gifted to ladies who need them. We have just received another batch of kits so please do help up to bolster our stock (which is rather low) of knitted knockers for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks again.
Crochet Corner:
A reminder that we now offer private crochet lessons for beginners and intermediate levels.
Please do contact us and we will arrange for a lesson for you at wool&more. Duration of each lesson is 1,5 hours and by appointment only. Please call and book your lesson/s today.
The Celtic Weave workshop was good, as reported to me – hope the ladies use and enjoy their new skill!
Below is a step-by-step guide (and videos) on how to do the Block stitch. The lovely multicoloured pattern for a crochet blanket.

Knitting:
Below is the link to a very different scarf, done in Honeycomb stitch. Am sure you could apply this stitch to a number of garments. Let us know how you manage it, please.

Reminder: We have some good quality wooden clothes hangers available and a really easy and inexpensive knitted method to cover them – great for your clothes and makes a super gift!! Maybe start getting a few sets done for inexpensive Christmas gifts – always well received!
Massive Stock to Clear:
Whilst no new yarns have recently come in, we have been very busy “culling” discontinued and redundant stock so the pile in the Reduced Bins is enormous! And growing daily – please do pop in to get some fantastic bargains – all at cost or below!!
B Y O B: Reminder!
Please Bring Your Own Bags (BYOB) when shopping at wool&more (and elsewhere)…. lovely re-usable fabric bags are the answer and help so much. Or, crochet / knit your very own bags!
Newsletters:
All past newsletters are on our website www.woolandmore.co.za – please do have a look. Your comments are always welcome.
Recently saw this quote by Robin Villiers-Furze which is so special:
“In the hands of a knitter, yarn becomes the medium that binds heart and soul”.
May your heart and soul be blessed and hugely creative!!
