As Spring rolls lazily into Summer, we have some Good News and some Bad News for you:
The Good News is that this will be a longer than usual newsletter and
The Bad News is that there will not be a newsletter for October …. sorry about that but as you may recall, a special little granddaughter will meet her grandmother for the first time in London so time to write and send a newsletter will be used elsewhere! Apologies again.
We would like to take this opportunity of wishing all our Jewish customers and suppliers (and friends) Shana Tova and well over the Fast. May your year ahead be healthy, happy and colourful!
Important – dates / times for trading:
Saturdays: Between September and March each year, our Saturday trading is shortened to First and Last Saturday of each month (except for December month, where we trade Every Saturday) from 09h30 to 12h30. **
** Because there is a religious holiday on Saturday 30th September, we will be Closed that day but for your convenience, we will Open on Saturday 23rd September instead.
Public Holidays: We will be Open from 09h30 to 12h30 on the following Public Holidays:
Monday 25th September (Heritage Day)
Saturday 16th December (Reconciliation Day)
Tuesday 26th December (Goodwill Day)
Monday 1st January (New Year’s Day)
We will be CLOSED on Monday 25th December (Christmas Day)
Annual Holiday: We will be Closed for business for a good rest from 9th October and re-open on Wednesday 25th October. Please do spread the word and we look forward to seeing you when we get back. Thanks for your indulgence.
Community Project Programs:
We have many blankets that have recently come in to be used for the community at large. We recently sent some blankies to Knysna and Sedgefield Hospices for their patients. They will also be getting some beanies for those having Chemotherapy.
Thanks so much, to everyone who has contributed to getting these blankets in …. as they dwindle (get given out) we will be calling for more – probably early next year to deal with Winter.
Please will you help the kids at various local creches and clinics by knitting balls for them for Christmas – these are easy, colourful, safe toys and a great stash-buster! A true win-win project!
There are two patterns from which to choose and both are available on our Resources Tab on the wool&more website.
Stuff the balls (for the Segment pattern) with stuffing or old pantyhose and if you would like to put a bell into the centre, this adds a new dimension. Any bright and varied colours of any yarn thickness would be fabulous. We would like to try and get at least 100 balls in before 7th December …. let’s see if we can do it!!! Thanks again.
Resources:
We have created a new tab on our website (www.woolandmore.co.za) called Resouces where we have listed all the links and patterns we have shared since January 2014 and where to find each one, for your ease of access. Please do use this resource – we will keep it up to date as best we can.
New Yarns:
There has been the annual price increase by Saprotex (all Elle, Charity lines) but I give them credit – it’s a really minimal increase for which we are very grateful!
Elle has just launched a few new yarns which should do well this summer:
Cotton On will be out at the end of September in a 4ply / 100gm ball. The colours are interesting and this will be a great seller – there is very little 4ply cotton available locally.
There are also a few new colours coming in on the Cotton On DK 250gm balls and the Seriously Chunky 100gm balls. Always a pleasure to work with – do come and see them (or keep an eye out on our Facebook page – as new yarns arrive, we do post pics of them).
Two new yarns called Sun Crush and Alula are acrylic DK yarns in 200gm balls with numerous colours in each ball. Much like Colour Wheels or Caron Cakes. They are interesting and will be fun to knit or crochet with – hopefully in our store before the end of September.
There are also some really lovely new colours available in the Charity DK range – they will do very well (but maybe at Family Knit’s expense!)
It seems that for this Summer, we need to think “Variegated / Graded” yarns and triangular shawls – They are all the rage in Europe and America now. To this end, most of the new Katia range is variegated, some more so than others.
We will be getting new colours in on the beautiful Bombay range, and new Silk-Viscose yarn for those special projects, Malibu is a soft and textured yarn and Washi Print is a funky and fun thick cotton blend in amazing colours.
We also have just received a range of huge size circular knitting needles from Addi – great for those thick and large projects.
The Nurturing Fibres soft KidSilk range is doing very well – just such a special and delectable yarn. Fantastic for a light, soft, cuddly and warm shawl. Below is a link to their website with some fabulous free patterns.

Crochet Corner:
The “Virus” Shawl is certainly doing the rounds – we had a sample size crocheted up in the Nurturing Fibre Eco Fusion yarn (cotton and bamboo blend) – it drapes amazingly and is really soft. Their colours are varied and gentle – perfect for summer. Thanks Debs for sharing this with us!
We are considering holding a four-hour workshop to learn the Virus Shawl techniques in November – if you are interested, please do let us know. If sufficient ladies are interested (4 minimum), we can arrange a time, venue and price.
The pattern is below but only in diagrammatic format. You can also google it for more details.
Carol shared an interesting crochet method for joining squares. The link is below – thanks, Carol!

Last but not least on the Crochet side of things – earlier this week, a delightful lady who popped in from abroad, mentioned that she is a crochet designer. Her name is Liana and her website is www.lianainstitches.com – she has some fabulous tips for everyone. Her patterns are available on Ravelry. Thanks for your visit Liana!
Knitting a blanket:
A delightful customer came in (from out of town) – she gave us the pattern of a “self -bordering” corner to corner knitted blanket. It’s so easy and so effective – pattern below for you! Many thanks, Margaret!!
MARGARET’S SELF-BORDERING SQUARE BLANKET
Using double knit, aran or chunky weight yarn, select circular needles one size larger than is normally required. (1m sq blanket would use approx. 400gm dk yarn)
Cast on 5 st.
Knit 3 st, yarn forward (as if to purl) then knit to end of row.
Repeat the above row until the sides are the length you require for the square blanket (approx. 140 st would be around 1m square)
Decrease:
Knit 2 st, k2tog, yf, k2tog then knit to end of row.
Repeat the above row until 5 st remain.
Cast off.
