Wool&more – August 2014 Newsletter
It’s ridiculous! The temperatures have been in the upper 20’s and early 30’s in August!! What is going on, I wonder? And why I feel it’s so crazy is that we have barely had winter in Plett, (unlike Johannesburg and Cape Town) and certainly need rain really badly.
So business is affected and having been my first winter in the yarn business, I see now that I have truly over-stocked on woolly, warm, winter yarn! The good news, for you, is that next winter, the prices on a lot of the yarn will be “last year’s prices”… What a good deal!
I have just received my catalogue from Katia (Spain) for their summer collection – what exquisite yarns and patterns they are presenting.
I can’t wait to get my summer order in (mid October) to see and feel. Seems like it will be a long, hot summer when pure cottons will be “the thing” to wear!
Saprotex (manufacturers of the Elle range) will be presenting their summer range early in September so I will tell you all about it in the next newsletter … something to look forward to!
Raffling the two lovely crocheted, donated scarves we chatted about last month was such fun: our winners, drawn by the lady who crocheted them, were Ann Squires (pink scarf) and Hettie Oelofse (from the Strand) who won the beige scarf. Well done ladies. More importantly, R185-00 was raised and we bought a big, heavy bag of lentils, pasta, beans, soup mix, etc for the soup kitchen. Thank you so much to all who bought tickets for this worthy cause. Please know that your R5 donations have certainly filled a hole in someone’s tummy.
Another customer brought in a really colourful and funky knitted blanket and asked that we raffle it for food for those in need. The blanket reminds me of Joseph’s Coat of many colours – it is so bright and happy, fluffy and cuddly and is approximately 85 x 180cm in size. So we will be raffling it for R10 per “ticket” and the draw will take place on Friday 19th September. So please do give for this worthy cause and have a chance to win this unique blankie!
Our latest Community Project Program, starting now, is to assist Annette van der Merwe of Plett to collect in excess of 1,000 beanies to be given to the Oncology Unit at George Hospital for the cancer patients. Annette is very busy crocheting bright pink flowers which will be sewn onto each beanie before being presented. She hopes to have more than 1,000 beanies (for men and women, old and young) by the 1st December. We at wool&more are happy to assist, have donated the bright pink yarn and are a collection point for your knitted or crocheted beanies. Any sizes, any colours … all made with love!! Your contribution will be very well received. If you are in or around Plett, please just pop them in by the end of October (or sooner) and if you are out of town, you are welcome to post them to us at PO Box 530, Plett 6600. Best luck and well done, Annette!! We are honoured to partner you in this worthwhile cause.
Here is a little something for the ladies who love to crochet. I do hope you find something inspiring in this link! Some of the designs are really different and delightful.

For the knitters, I am including the pattern/instructions for the “no-sew squares” blanket/wrap – so many ladies have asked me for it, that I decided to type it out and forward to you for your use. I just love it … one can make the squares bigger (or smaller) than the pattern (simply adjust the number of cast on stitches), can have great fun with colour and even include some textures.
“No-Sew Squares” blanket/throw/shawl
Cast on 20st.
1st row: Knit 9, k2tog, k9
Next row: k9, k2tog, k8
Next row: k8, k2tog, k8… continue until 1st remains.
Next square:
Pick up 9st along edge (=10st) then cast on another 10 (=20)
Knit the next square as above.
Continue until as long as you wish then, to change direction back down your knitted length, with 1st remaining:
Cast on 9st (=10st), knit those 10st to get back to the square then pick up 10 more st along the knitted square adjoining (=20st).
Knit that square as above.
Now pick up all 20 st along the new square and the existing row.
Knit that and all other squares the same way.
Then turn as above to “change direction”.
Should you require larger squares, cast on 30 or 40st and use the same principle, always knitting two together at the middle of each row.
And have fun with it … changing colours and textures when and wherever you like!
