Offthehook Newsletter August 2012
Life is full of great adventures and opportunities.
I had the privilege of surfing with one of my all surfing heroes, Tom Curren. For those of you that don’t know surfing. He is the Michael Phelps of surfing, a real legend.
Louise and I then had the privilege of having Tom Curren, Jordy Smith and Good friend’s Craig Kolesky and Kai Linder for lunch at Offthehook.
The feeling of that day with Tom and Jordy will be with me for the rest of my life.
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” ― Dr. Seuss
I am still smiling!

WEDGE 2012 A REAL CLASSIC
In an event that had everything, world number two Sacha Specker edged out Iain Campbell in the 2012 Wedge Classic held on Central beach ,Plettenberg Bay from 5 th – 7 th July.
This iconic event is in its 17 th year and over 100 body boarders from around the country participated in the eight different categories. The sea conditions over the 3 days ranged from tricky to superb with the superb conditions coming on cue just in time for the pro final.
In an awesome Pro semi final which saw the advantage swing from rider to rider, local hotshot Niklas Martin was knocked out in the heat of the weekend losing out to the eventual runner – up Campbell.
Although the local wedge wave didn’t always play along and give home advantage to their riders some stand out performances from locals Martin and young Mike Searle ensured that Plett has a healthy representation on the SA body boarding circuit.
Something new and fun this year was the tandem body boarding event which saw a seasoned pro and a gromet compete together as a team trying to replicate each other on the wave . This brought lots of laughs from the crowd and the judges who were novice volunteers for this event . The winners had to be decided by a game of rock, paper , scissors.
At the prize giving, organiser Wayne Craig said he was ” stoked at the crowd turn out and success of the event ” and he went on to thank sponsors Bitou Municipality , Plett Tourism and Robberg Fine Foods
Also thanked were supporting sponsors Offthehook Seafood cafe,The Table Restaurant , The Surf Shop, Rossi Bodyboards, Glider Sunglasses, Red Bull, Events and tents and SJ Hiring.
