Millions lost in jewellery heist
A R200 000 reward is being offered after criminals made off with priceless jewels and other valuables during a recent burglary in Plettenberg Bay.
The town’s crime prevention association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier said the burglary is believed to have taken place at a home in Cutty Sark Avenue between Monday night 13 May and Thursday morning 16 May.
Important documents were stolen
The suspects managed to remove a large safe of about 100kg, with a wheel combination lock, from the home.
It contained various jewellery items and important documents.
Olivier said the homeowners were away on holiday during the time of the incident.
“The suspects gained entry to the house and broke the safe out of the wall where it was mounted. The safe was later found with all the contents missing,” Olivier said.
No one has been arrested in connection with the theft yet.
Among the items in the safe were a gold Rolex watch with a diamond dial, an art deco platinum women’s watch with diamonds, a gold bangle watch, a sapphire-and-diamond ring and four gold Kruger rands and several other golden and antique golden coins.
In the safe was also a black leather purse containing several jewellery items including a triple-pearl necklace with diamond clasp, a double-pearl necklace with a diamond, ruby and sapphire clasp, an antique double-pearl necklace with diamond clasp, a 22 carat gold necklace, a three-strand pearl bracelet, a diamond necklace with oriental pearls and large diamond in the middle, and a white gold necklace with diamonds (the two middle diamonds are about three and two carats).
More losses
Other jewellery in the safe included a wedding ring, a pair of pearl and diamond earrings, a gold men’s watch with a crocodile leather strap, three art deco broaches with diamonds and sapphires, two white gold and diamond wedding rings, an antique diamond ring with a pearl in the middle, several gold necklaces with pendants, an evening bag with pearl cover, a yellow gold bracelet and a small leather pouch with a rose gold and sapphire ring and two diamonds.
