Local Bambi rescued from a plastic attack
The impact of plastic on the environment was highlighted recently when residents of Nature’s Valley noticed a female bushbuck limping along in the area.
On closer inspection, it became apparent that a plastic ring around the animal’s leg was the culprit.
Nature’s Valley Trust director Dr Mark Brown said following reports of the injured bushbuck, a response team, including staff from the Robberg Veterinary Clinic, was mobilised on 18 April.
With the help of the NVT team, Bitou superintendent Marco Barnardo and Robberg veterinarian Brendan Tindell, the animal were successfully darted.
When Tindell examined the leg, he found that the animal had sustained a serious injury as a result of the plastic ring.
“Dr Tindell managed to cut the offending plastic away. It looks like it was a boxed milk plastic neck ring,” Brown said.
Tindell treated the wound, dosed the bushbuck with antibiotics and “sent her on her way”.
Brown said that they had seen the animal in Nature’s Valley area over the past few days and can report that the bushbuck was recovering well. “She has started putting pressure on the foot, so it looks promising.”
