International biodiversity day
Do consumers of seafood think about sea-friendly options prior to ordering in a restaurant? Do restaurants know about sea-friendly food?
How do we get this message to the town of Tsitsikamma?
Themed ‘our biodiversity, our food and our health’ the International Biodiversity campaign held annually on 22 May provides a platform for SANParks and other conservation agencies to spread the message about sustainable seafood options and will encourage attendees to use the WWF SASSI guide.
This will be done by a marine ecologist on the day.
The local Municipality will also be asking difficult questions about solid waste and the need for civil action in curbing the scourge of plastic pollution.
Local restaurants, chefs and cooks invited will compete for the ‘best seafood in Tsitsikamma’ title.
Judges include a guest from Capsicum Culinary in Port Elizabeth, Park Manager for the Tsitsikamma and a Disc Jockey (DJ) from the local radio station.
The take home message: Think about what you consume, think about what you sell, think about how food is harvested for current and future generations and how this affects nature.
The event venue is in a no-take Marine Protected Area although 20% of it was rezoned for local communities 2 years ago.
It is hoped the event will kick-start a conversation about sustainable fishing and thus instil a deeper appreciation for protected environments and see the role the National Park plays in the area.
The event starts at 10:00 until about 14:00, in the Storms River Rest Camp, Tsitsikamma.
