Human Settlements MEC to engage with Qolweni residents over housing issues
Following five days of rioting in Plettenberg Bay by Qolweni residents about their unhappiness with a community housing project, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Tertius Simmers is set to visit the community tomorrow (Thursday) 15 October to “dispel all inaccuracies” about the project.
The Qolweni community, last Thursday, blocked the N2 between the Shell garage and Kwanokuthula as a result of discontent with the progress being made with a housing project planned for the area. The action lasted five days.
Simmers in a statement on Wednesday said that he would be engaging with the leadership of the Qolweni community about the “on-going housing issues” in Bitou on Thursday 15 October.
“I’m looking forward to this meeting so that the precise facts can be placed on record and to dispel all inaccuracies that are currently being promoted in the public arena. All misrepresentations will be corrected,” Simmers said in the statement.
“The human settlements portfolio is a concurrent function, provincially and it is vital that prolific intergovernmental relations between the province and local authorities exist so that our people can optimally benefit. As the Western Cape government, we remain committed to improving the lives of our residents.”
