South African golfing great Gary Player celebrated his 89th birthday on Friday 1 November- with a special birthday song from his great-granddaughter Ava.
Player, who is also a Plett resident, celebrated with some of his family.
Asked by the Knysna-Plett Herald what the significance was of the single candle, Player said: “The single candle is because I can blow it out! If you put 89 candles there – first of all you can’t get 89 candles on a cake- and I don’t have enough oxygen to blow them out. So, it pumped up my ego.”
Player has six children, 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren “with a lot of new ones on the way…” said Player.
