Getting kids to collect trash
Dynamic TrekkingforTrash duo, Camilla Howard and Michael Baretta, embarked on an epic 3 000km journey along the coast from Alex Bay to Kosi Bay, specifically to create awareness of coastal litter and its impact on the environment.
To date they have covered a distance of 1 500km, Brenton-on-Sea being the halfway point, and collected 2.5tons of litter along the way.
Representatives of the Brenton Residents Association welcomed the TrekkingforTrash team, who enjoyed a sponsored lunch at Chef’s@Nauticus Place Restaurant in Brenton-on-Sea on Tuesday, Janaury 15.
Howard and Baretta actively strive to engage specifically with the children of the communities they pass through and they are are running a competition on their Facebook page.
“Post a picture on our wall of you cleaning Knysna of its surrounds and you could win R5 000 cash. Let us know the approximate weight of the litter collected and we will add it to our total.” The competition ends at the end of April.
The trekkers are also raising funds for Green Education and readers can click on the donate page of their website (www.trekkingfortrash.co.za) for more information or to follow their progress.
On Monday, Janaury 14, they teamed up with kids from Myoli Beach to Platbank for a clean-up operation, which resulted in 35kg of litter being collected. Thulani Brinkhuis (13) collected the most litter (5kg) and won a prize.
