Focus on sustainable fishing
SA National Parks celebrated International Biodiversity Day on Wednesday 23 May by hosting a seafood competition in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. The Table restaurant and bar and Cattle Baron restaurant participated, showcasing sustainable seafood sponsored by Robberg Fine Foods.
The Table walked away with the honours after judges Andile Namntu, Chris Patton and Eugenia Mkhatshwa were impressed by the teamwork in preparing dishes for the day, the time it took to prepare dishes, the texture and taste.
During the event, Sanparks marine ecologist Kyle Smith spoke about how consumers could look out for the Marine Stewardship Council’s blue logo and the World Wildlife Fund Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (Sassi) logo, indicating sustainable fishing, before consuming seafood.
Sassi has a list of green, orange and red categories recommending sustainable fishing and consumption. The green category points to seafood that is sustainably harvested and considers current and future species. Orange encourages consumers to think about their decision to consume and red contains species that should not be consumed at all, and consumers are encouraged to request to see this logo in restaurants prior to ordering.
