Fighting crime with music
Hip Hop vs Crime is a project that aims to instil positive life skills through hip-hop music among the youth.
This is done through a disciplined hip-hop environment where this music genre can be an alternative to crime and other social ills.
The project is headed by Faizel Kleynhans from Plett Active Youth and his team, and on 30 June, they held their one-year birthday celebration.
It started off with a street jam at the New Horizons taxi rank and ended with a hip-hop anniversary show later that evening at the Formosa Primary School hall. The show featured a packed line-up of local talents such as Mark Davids, Enrico Sam, Axe Crew, Unexpected, OSG Girls, Future, Animation Crew, Rieldans, Malibu vs Mablo, Redefined, Hurley and Victor.
“We had, as usual, the support from Prophet-style from Oudtshoorn. The show also featured legendary dancer Ramone Dewet from Prophets of da City and MelRock, a television presenter from Cape Town who hosts A Walk With Mel on Cape Town TV,” said Kleynhans.
Making it to TV
“A Walk With Mel is a mini-series presented by Melissa de Vries aka MelRock Lizzo, that covers interviews with entertainers in Cape Town. These include dancers, MCs, DJs, graffiti artists, actors etc. The anniversary show will also feature on her programme.
Many good things came out of the show, as much-needed help with the project was offered by professionals. Both Ramone and MelRock will return with programmes that will assist Hip Hop vs Crime in reaching their ultimate goal of making hip-hop an alternative to crime among the youth.
“We further want to thank our artists, loyal supporters and sponsors,” said Kleynhans.
Although some assistance was received, there is still a lot of help needed to achieve their goal, especially locally. “We do ask our local businesses, government, and other organisations to assist in any way to keep our youth away from crime through hip-hop,” he added.
Anyone wanting to assist can contact Kleynhans on 078 986 3554.
