Fight against filth
Following a decision to stop its annual street collection in an attempt to take their funding to digital platforms, the Plettenberg Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) hosted its first fundraising beach cleanup on 1 May.
A large group of locals and visitors showed up with family and friends at the local NSRI base from where they were split into groups and sent off to assigned locations where Station 14 volunteers met them and assisted in cleaning up sections of the beach.
After an hour, rubbish bags were dropped off at a collection point from where Bitou Municipality collected them.
The reason for the collection was that the station is transitioning to digital fundraising platforms to not only secure sustainable funding but also achieve clean audits.
According to the team they managed to identify several areas that needed focus in terms of coastal cleanup.
“It was also a great time for our crew to socialise with the public and explain our new cashless donation system which we have moved over too,” the team said in a statement.
They also thanked everyone who turned up for the cleanup. “Judging from the amount of bags at the collection points, we definitely think a difference was made.”
