The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for extreme fire danger conditions on Monday. These conditions will affect the Kai !Garib and Kareeberg Local Municipalities, as well as the Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape, and the northern parts of the Central Karoo District Municipality in the Western Cape.
The FDI (Fire Danger Index) is expected to exceed 75, indicating that fires could ignite and spread rapidly, posing risks of property damage and potential loss of life, both human and animal.
Across the rest of the country, cooler weather will prevail, with mist expected in several areas during the morning.

The UVB sunburn index is expected to be high.

Here are some essential fire prevention tips to help reduce the risk of fire:
At Home:
- Install Smoke Alarms: Place smoke alarms on every floor, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries yearly.
- Create an Escape Plan: Develop and practice a fire escape plan with multiple exit routes. Ensure everyone in the household knows the plan and where to meet outside.
- Keep Flammable Materials Safe: Store flammable materials like gasoline, paints, and solvents in properly labeled, fireproof containers, away from heat sources.
- Maintain Electrical Systems: Have a qualified electrician inspect and maintain electrical systems regularly. Avoid overloading electrical outlets and use extension cords safely.
- Keep Cooking Areas Clean: Never leave cooking unattended. Keep combustibles like towels and paper away from the stove and oven.
- Use Fireplaces and Heaters Safely: Use fireplace screens to prevent sparks from escaping and have chimneys cleaned regularly. Keep space heaters away from flammable materials and turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Properly Dispose of Ashes: Store ashes from fireplaces and grills in a metal container with a lid, and keep it outside, away from structures and combustibles.
- Monitor Candles: Never leave burning candles unattended. Place them on stable, non-flammable surfaces and away from flammable materials.
In the Yard:
- Maintain a Defensible Space: Clear dead vegetation, leaves, and other flammable materials from around your home and maintain a defensible space of at least 30 feet.
- Use Fire-Resistant Plants: Opt for fire-resistant plants in landscaping and maintain a well-watered garden to reduce the risk of fire spreading.
- Store Firewood Safely: Keep firewood, propane tanks, and other flammable materials away from the home, ideally in a covered, detached structure.
- Clear Debris: Regularly remove fallen leaves, branches, and other debris from your yard and roof to minimize fire fuel.
- Properly Maintain Equipment: Keep lawn mowers and other equipment in good working order to prevent sparks from igniting dry grass.
During High Fire Danger:
- Avoid Outdoor Burning: Refrain from burning leaves, debris, or other materials during high fire risk periods.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Notify local authorities if you see suspicious activities or unattended fires in your area.
- Follow Local Fire Restrictions: Adhere to any fire bans or restrictions issued by local authorities during periods of high fire danger.
By following these tips, you can help reduce the risk of fire and protect your home and loved ones.
