Extension for the Rock Lobster Fishing Season due to Weather
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment has responded to urgent appeals from small-scale fishing cooperatives impacted by severe weather conditions.
This decision, made in consultation with officials, comes as a recognition of the challenges faced due to extreme weather in the Western Cape recently. The Public Notice confirming this extension will be released on April 12, 2024, and communicated directly to relevant stakeholders, including the Chairpersons of small-scale cooperatives and Nearshore Commercial right holders in the region.
Additionally, Minister Creecy noted that an exemption has already been granted to allow fishing activities during the upcoming weekend of April 13 and 14, 2024.
