AfroChic Beauty Salon: Modern Glamour Extraordinaire
Last week Sunday, together with about 25 or so other people, I attended the opening of a new beauty salon, to bear witness to its modern glamour and elegance, and what it promises to offer.
Ladies, if you’re still deciding where and how you’re going to get your hair-do, look no further – it’s cosmopolitan and classy.
Nomabandla Jacobs – Owner of AfroChic beauty salon in Kwanokuthula Plettenberg Bay
Nomabandla Jacobs has always had this dream of having her own beauty salon, and in order to realise that dream, she had to knock door to door asking to do people’s hair. She did this until she eventually opened her own beauty salon in Qolweni in 2008.
But she was not done, because 10 years later, she opens a second salon in Kwano and its elegantly called “AfroChic”. It’s got to be one of the most well-to-do beauty salons I have ever seen; it’s well-resourced and well positioned on Kwano’s main street, just metres away from Skhulu’s Lounge. It’s hard not to like it.

And beyond the glitz and the glamour, there’s a twist, harmonizing with the spirit of Ubuntu: the 38 year old is inviting other beauty practitioners, those who do not have space and resources to fulfil their dreams, to come and be part of AfroChic. All they have to do is rent space.
During our conversation she revealed that she loves sharing; what a noble gesture. She too was assisted by SEDA and Red Door, on the fundamentals of starting and running a small business enterprise, so she feels that this is her way of giving back to her community.
In a time where small business enterprises, especially those run by young black South Africans, are not receiving enough assistance from the powers that be, Nomabandla’s story is one of inspiration for the millions of other young people aspiring to get into the world of business.
It’s business leaders like her that we should celebrate, not only for the tenacity she has shown, but for daring the odds by making a bold statement that the young, black and female have what it takes to change our societies for the better.
Kudos to Nomabandla for breaking the barriers.
