At just 16 years old, Ayabonga Mkontwana is already making waves in South African youth football. The gifted centre back was instrumental in guiding Murray High School to victory in the prestigious Schools Cup during the recent U19 High School Soccer Festival hosted at Imizamo Yethu High in George.
Hailing from Kwanokuthula, a township in Plettenberg Bay, Ayabonga’s football journey began with the Kabo Yellow Football Club Development Team, part of the local football structure under the Plettenberg Bay Local Football Association. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and defensive discipline set him apart as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Driven by Purpose and Passion
Reflecting on the Schools Cup win, Ayabonga expressed immense pride in his team’s achievement. “It feels incredible to contribute to such an important victory. Our dream is to compete – and win – the Kay Motsepe Foundation tournament, and to uplift other young talents along the way,” he said.
Ayabonga’s aspirations extend far beyond school football. He hopes to one day wear the colours of top-tier South African clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, or Kaizer Chiefs. His ambitions are fuelled by an unwavering dedication to the sport and a mindset shaped by discipline.
