Shark Spotters the Underrated Guardians of Plett Beaches
Plett Shark Spotters, established in November 2022, plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of beachgoers in Plettenberg Bay. With trained spotters operational at five of the busiest beaches, the program has not only enhanced beach safety but also created employment and skills development opportunities for 14 locals from under-resourced communities.
Making Waves in Beach Safety
Plett Shark Spotters works closely with the Bitou Municipality Beach Control, Lifesavers, and the NSRI station. This collaboration has significantly reduced shark-human conflict and restored confidence among locals and tourists using the beaches. The program has proved to be effective and essential, especially during the busy festive season when beach activity peaks. – Shark Spotters: Keeping Plett Beaches Safe
Community Support and Operational Challenges
Despite its success, Plett Shark Spotters faces operational funding challenges. To ensure continued safety on Plett’s beaches, the program has requested public support through recurring or one-off donations. Contributions to Plett Shark Spotters are investments in the local community, environment, and economy.

Inspiring Stories from the Field
Nicky Namntu, a dedicated field manager for Plett Shark Spotters, exemplifies the passion and commitment of the team. Her journey from a curious child in Keurbooms to a shark-spotting advocate is inspiring. Nicky’s story highlights the transformative power of the Shark Spotters program, which enabled her to pursue her dream adventures.
Growing up in Keurbooms, Nicky developed a deep love for the ocean, often exploring the Keurbooms River despite her grandmother’s warnings. This curiosity led her to earn a certificate in Environmental Education, Training, and Development Practice through WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa).
Recently, Nicky attended the 7th Southern African Shark and Ray Symposium in Durban. This experience was a highlight of her year, allowing her to meet marine biologists, researchers, and explorers who share her passion for the ocean.
Facing her fear of sharks, Nicky, with encouragement from her colleague Melissa Nel, a marine biologist, decided to free dive with sharks at Aliwal Shoal. Despite initial fear, the experience was exhilarating and reinforced her commitment to ocean conservation. Nicky’s family was proud of her adventurous spirit, and she credited the Shark Spotters program for providing the opportunities that shaped her journey. – Learning to swim and freediving with sharks – Nicky Namntu
