“When I first started, I thought, ‘This is going to be tough!’ But I’ve always loved a challenge,” Tyrone recalls with a smile.
With the support of his coach Brandon, Tyrone successfully rode his first wave, feeling a rush of joy and accomplishment. The journey was not without its difficulties. “Handling those big boards was challenging! And the ‘duck dive’? I felt like a confused duck out there!” he jokes.
Despite numerous wipeouts, Tyrone found pure bliss in the rhythm of the waves. “Catching that wave after so many falls? Best feeling ever!” he exclaims.
For Tyrone, surfing is more than just a sport; it’s his sanctuary. It serves as a mental reset button, smoothing out life’s rough patches.
Reflecting on his passion, Tyrone sees a parallel between surfing and life’s challenges. “You fall down, you get back up. It’s as simple as that,” he muses. “Just like surfing, when a wave knocks you down, you paddle back out and try again.”

About Plett Shark Spotters
Established in November 2022, Plett Shark Spotters operates at five of Plettenberg Bay’s busiest beaches, ensuring safety during the festive season and beyond. This initiative has created 14 full-time jobs and skill development opportunities for locals from under-resourced communities.
Working closely with the Bitou Municipality Beach Control, Lifesavers, and NSRI station, Plett Shark Spotters plays a crucial role in enhancing beach safety. Their efforts have been effective in reducing shark-human conflict and restoring confidence in the local beaches.
