A Whale of a Beginning
The festival opened with a powerful symbolic tribute at Lookout Beach, where a large human whale tail formation was captured by drone footage, accompanied by a community beach cleanup initiative. The unveiling of a bronze Mother and Calf Humpback Whale sculpture by artist Malcolm Solomon set the tone for the event, reinforcing Plettenberg Bay’s status as South Africa’s first Whale Heritage Site.
Science That Spoke to Everyone
At the Marine Science Symposium held at Beacon Island Resort, leading experts explored a wide range of marine topics, including Cape fur seals and rabies outbreaks, sharks, orcas, penguins, seahorses, and deep-sea ecosystems. The presentations successfully balanced scientific depth with public accessibility, helping bridge the gap between research and community understanding.
Surf, Sport & Culture
The coastline came alive during the Wedge Classic Surf & Bodyboarding Contest, South Africa’s longest-running bodyboarding competition. From experienced professionals to emerging talent, participants rode winter swells while spectators enjoyed beachside activities including slacklines, treasure hunts, live music, and pop-up entertainment.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of the festival’s strongest focuses was youth engagement. The Ocean Aweh-ness Hub, led by Plett Shark Spotters, NSRI, and Checkers ACT, welcomed approximately 200 schoolchildren for interactive lessons in ocean safety, marine careers, and conservation. For many, it was their first direct experience of the ocean.
Partner initiatives such as the Black Mermaid Foundation and Adopt-a-Swimmer programme hosted snorkeling workshops in the Keurbooms Estuary, deepening children’s connection with marine ecosystems.
Beyond the Waves
Festival-goers also experienced a wide range of ocean-inspired activities beyond the surf, including birding excursions, reef clean-ups led by Pro Dive, poetry walks, art workshops, and the popular Mungo’s Winter Swim. All events aligned with the festival’s guiding message: “Observe, Conserve, Preserve.”
