Closing the gap on baboons – NVT Newsflash
It would seem that our baboons are again “on the hunt” as the number of reported baboon incidents have recently increased.
We have noted some interesting trends regarding burglar bars (metal and perspex) both here and further afield.
Bars spaced 6cm apart keep baboons out.
Bars spaced 9cm or more apart… sorry, but they’re going to get in.
Metal is unbendable. If it’s perspex that you prefer, remember that because it’s bendable the smaller gap is safer – 7cm at least.
Our other wild friends and unintended consequences of kindness.
We love them… those wild creatures that share our spaces and nothing is more delightful than a wild creature, usually desperately shy, tentatively taking food that you’ve kindly left out for it. Or, even more thrilling, a wild animal taking food from your hand.
However, the chances are that while this is wonderful for you, it could well be a death sentence for this animal. By losing their fear of man, they stand to be accused of invading our homes, or getting too familiar with people who may not wish to interact with wildlife… they ultimately lose this battle and sadly, it can be fatal.
