Nicky from Plettenberg Bay Excels in Finland
Nicky Smith, a dedicated triathlete, surpassed her own expectations at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Lahti, Finland, on 26 August, making her mark as the fastest South African woman to cross the finish line.
“Words can’t express how thrilled I am to have achieved a personal best time of 4h42min,” exclaimed Nicky. She secured the 22nd position in her age group and an impressive 99th place overall, competing against a field of 39 professional women athletes.
Arriving at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Lahti, Finland, Nicky had clear objectives in mind. She aimed to flawlessly execute her race strategy, with the ultimate goal of achieving a personal best time. Her success in doing so left her beaming with satisfaction.
“Finland stands out as one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever had the privilege to race in,” she shared.
“The seemingly endless emerald-green forests, numerous pristine lakes, and impeccably maintained roads create an ideal setting for a world championship triathlon. I cherished every moment leading up to the race and the race itself, surrounded by the love and support of my boyfriend, mom, and dad, who shared in this remarkable experience with me.”
