Tackling crime with dance
Hip Hop vs Crime is an initiative that aims to create positive relaxation and entertainment in the community by changing the mindset of the youth and giving them an alternative to the negative binding values in their communities.
The initiative is the brainchild of two local organisations, Plett Active Youth (Pay) and Step Out With Courage.
The first workshop and show held in July 2017 in Plettenberg Bay was a big success, according to Pay chair Faizel Kleynhans.
“It has shown us that there is a big interest among the youth. We had about 700 to 800 people coming to the show, which indicated that our communities wanted more of this kind of entertainment.”
Thus the initiative is back with another spectacular showcase of the best hip-hop breakdancers in South Africa, and winners of numerous competitions.
“This time we not only have Bliksemstraal and B-boy Benni, we have Concrete Apostles from Cape Town and Prophet Style from Oudtshoorn helping out.
“Seven B-boys, with more than 15 years of joint dancing experience, have taken the culture and chosen to guide it forward by sharing their knowledge with the younger generation,” says Kleynhans.
Concrete Apostles strive to keep South African B-boying on the international battle map, says Kleynhans, having already funded a trip to two breaking events in Europe – Euro Battle Portugal, where they placed in the top 16, and Battle Europa France, where they reached the semifinals.
The event will be held over two days, 2 and 3 March, hosted in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, to create maximum exposure for local artists.
The Concrete Apostles and Prophet Style will be at both events, and the programme will be as follows:
2 March:
- At Formosa Primary School, New Horizons, Plettenberg Bay. The show starts 18:30, tickets cost R30.
- Spotlight nightclub, Plettenberg Bay. The show starts 23:00, tickets cost R20, or R40 for a VIP ticket.
3 March:
- Training session at New Horizons community hall. Starts 11:00, attendance free.
- Knysna Secondary School, Hornlee. The show starts 18:30, tickets cost R30.
