Swim Adventures Explores the Serenity of Keurbooms River
Venturing into the enchanting realm of Keurbooms River, 22 open-water swimmers, accompanied by a drama-free llama, embarked on a weekend escapade on the 11th and 12th of November 2023.
Organized by Gary Koekemoer, this marked the inaugural Keurbooms Meander event, drawing participants from various corners of South Africa, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Gqeberha, and beyond. The first day unfolded with a captivating 5 km swim leading to a picturesque picnic spot, while the second day embraced a leisurely 2-3 km swim, meandering from below the bridge and extending past Forever Plettenberg Resort.
Gary Koekemoer expressed the collective sentiment of the swimmers, who found themselves metaphorically blown away by the paradisiacal beauty of Keurbooms River. The event, characterized as a non-competitive recreational gathering, allowed participants to revel in the ochre-treacle waters, accompanied by the echoing calls of the Piet-my-vrou (red-breasted cuckoo) resonating off the cliffs. The majestic trees of the Afromontane forest stood as silent guardians throughout the experience.
Gratitude was extended to Forever Resorts, CapeNature, Plett Tourism, and Bitou Municipality for their hospitality and support, contributing to the overall awe-inspiring experience. Koekemoer concluded by expressing the anticipation of returning next year, underscoring the event’s unique and memorable nature.
