Plett Rage event for charity
For 10 days every summer holiday, Plettenberg Bay is party central for thousands of school-leavers who flock to the coastal holiday town for the annual Plett Rage, while “slightly more mature” locals work around the clock to ensure a good time is had by all.
Well, this winter, locals will have their turn to paint the town red with the second Geezer Rage – an event to reward residents for putting up with the youngsters.
“Everyone works very hard to make the Plett Rage a success and it is not always easy on those in the industry. There are always a few mumbles and grumbles over the event and we thought maybe it is because locals were missing out on the fun. So we decided to start an event to allow residents to also let their hair loose,” one of the organisers Shirley Tecklenburg Ochse said.
And what makes the event even more alluring is that all proceeds are donated to charity.
Last year, about R15 000 was raised for the Plettenberg Bay NSRI, and this year the funds will go to Plett Watch, the town’s neighbourhood watch group, as well as the NSRI.
“Last year, the event ran over a weekend, but we realised that we are a bit too old to party for two consecutive days, so we’ve decided to split the event,” Ochse quipped.
She added that this year the first event will take place on July 30 and will be held at different venues in the town centre.
It will kick off at local restaurant LM in Plett at 18:00 with a delicious meal and live music by Sam Hartman – father of 2009 Idols winner Jason Hartman – and wine tasting hosted by Bonnievale Wines.
“There will also be a big surprise by Big Circle Entertainment, but we are keeping that a secret for now.”
At 20:00 the dance floor will be opened at Zanzibar, and at 22:00 local DJ Mad Brad will take over and ensure the party heats up.
“At the end of the year, before season starts, we will have another event for families.”
Tickets will be R180 each and will include the meal at LM, wine tasting, entertainment and entrance to all the venues.
Ochse said the theme for this year was “Jungle Fever” and that partygoers were encouraged to bring out their “inner animal” during the event.
“There will also be fantastic prizes up for grabs thanks to wonderful sponsors.”
Ochse said the reason why Plett Watch was chosen as this year’s main beneficiary was because volunteers worked very hard to keep the entire Plett community as safe as possible.
“We would really like to ensure they all have good safety gear and torches. They have told us they needed cameras up in certain hot spots, and we hope to ensure that that materialises.”
She added that volunteers said they would even drop off tickets to the events to partygoers while on patrol.
