Mnce Journey through Art and Culture
Embarking on the journey into the artistic realm with the enigmatic Mncedisi Ncedani, affectionately known as “Mnce.”
A visit to the Tshisa Talent office unfolds a conversation with an industry trailblazer who requires no formal introduction. Mnce’s attire, a captivating embodiment of “African authentic style,” prompts admiration for his distinctive fashion sense.
While some may recall his DJ moniker, DJ Jazz TrainLive, from his days spinning African jazz on MCFM radio, Mnce’s multifaceted talents extend far beyond the DJ booth. Reflecting on his past, he reminisces about the birth of DJ Jazz TrainLive when he realized his growing following and ventured into live performances at private events.
A true polymath, Mnce dons various hats, serving as a producer, event organizer, and the general manager of Tshisa Talent. His journey traces back to the 90s when he engaged with the Simunye Community Centre in Kwanokuthula. Formal training at the New African College in Cape Town in 1998 laid the groundwork for his skills in script writing, songwriting, acting, and stage performance. Returning in 1999, Mnce worked with local groups, sharing his expertise and uplifting young talents, eventually becoming the Arts and Culture coordinator at Simunye Centre.
Mnce’s influence resonates in the Kwanokuthula arts scene, fostering the growth of local artists, dance groups, and Kwaito singers. Transitioning to 2008, after concluding his contract with Simunye Centre, Mnce found himself at Lunchbox Theatre, reigniting his passion for theater. In 2012, the inception of Tshisa Talent marked a pivotal point in his career, juggling responsibilities between Tshisa Talent and Lunchbox Theatre.
Reflecting on his experiences as an event organizer, Mnce recalls challenges, including a loss incurred while bringing jazz artist Sipho Gumede to Plett. These setbacks became invaluable lessons, propelling him to further education through Tshisa Talent workshops.
Tshisa Talent, formerly Bitou Arts, bears witness to Mnce’s dedication. The name change was motivated by their vision, aligning with the essence of the talents discovered in townships. Tshisa Talent, translating to “hot” in isiXhosa, epitomizes the fiery creativity found in these communities.
A significant endeavor under Tshisa Talent’s umbrella is the African Waves Arts Festival, a highlight of the Plett Arts Festival. This platform showcased local talents in music, dance, poetry, and more, encouraging a celebration of African roots. Mnce expresses gratitude for the support from Plett Tourism and the National Lottery Commission, emphasizing the pivotal role played in the success of the African Waves Arts Festival.
In closing, Mnce passionately urges support for local artists, emphasizing their pivotal role in the creative landscape. A heartfelt appreciation is extended to Plett Tourism, the attentive audience, and the National Lottery Commission for contributing to the triumph of the African Waves Arts Festival.
