It’s a rap” as the Plett Arts Festival 2017 comes to an end
Eye candy was the predominant theme this year at the Plett Arts Festival, a three week event bringing colour, sound, memorable performances and feasting on fabulous food to the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay.
Festival goers relished in music, drama and comedy, enjoyed musicians, art exhibitions and award-winning films. As always, Plett presented a one-of-a-kind backdrop to our art extravaganza and introduced the Plett Twilight Meander and Plett Peep Art this year.
The town showcased theatrical actors, visual artists, musicians and films to inspire and nourish visitors and local residents of Plett. Local artists displayed their fine art throughout the festival during individual exhibitions and the Plett Arts Twilight Meander.
In only a few short years, the Plett ARTS Festival has showcased more than 150 artists. Attendance has grown since its debut in 2014, with more than 2000 festival goers in 2017 alone.
With a growing reputation in excellence, Plett is firmly established as a destination for acclaimed artists, all the while cultivating local talent.
Also new this year was the introduction of a Mobile Catering & Catering for the Film Industry workshop. This was hosted by iKasi Media and Plett Tourism, and was presented by Byron de Carvalho of Shesha Caterers. The workshop forms part of Ikasi Media’s intensified local upskilling and training programme, in line with the Garden Route Klein Karoo strategy to attract film makers to our region, to prepare locals for participation in this industry. This falls in line with the food and film theme and the Plett Food & Film.
This year’s Plett Food & Film Ambassador was the effervescent Jenny Morris and the line-up was thought-provoking with an underlying theme of war. Plett Food & Film director, Cindy Wilson-Trollip, commented; “This year, we had all the ingredients of the Plett Food & Film we have come to expect – thought provoking film, excellent food, wine and well contextualized, superb live performances. Our selection of films this year all celebrated the resilience of the human spirit, which became extremely poignant viewed right now, in a time of rebuilding in our town after the devastating firestorm.”
If you happened to have missed it, do yourself a great favour and make a note in your diary right now to attend next year. The Plett Arts Festival was from the 30th of June – 22nd of July this year, so keep an eye on the website and be sure to book for 2018.
