Afrikaanse Taalmuseum
The Afrikaans Language Museum
The history of Afrikaans and the characters who played a major part in it’s development come alive in this interesting and educational tourist attraction.
Combine your visit with an outing to the Afrikaans Language Monument which is situated on the Paarl Mountains on the outskirts of town.
Travel back in time
The museum is situated in Gideon Malherbe’s house, the ground floor of which has been partially restored. It’s not only the wallpaper that will intrigue you; original furniture from the 19th century will take you back to the era of secret meetings and families with 16 children.
Printing: then and now
The Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (Association of True Afrikaners) was established in this house on 14 August 1875.
The museum is home to the printing press on which Die Afrikaanse Patriot, the first Afrikaans newspaper in the world, was printed.
