It’s Fun to be a Filly!
The Filly’s is a group of like-minded women who got together and decided to make a difference in the various communities around them where help and support is needed the most. They provide humanitarian services and create awareness in support of various charities in the Paarl Valley and surrounding areas.
The Filly’s was started by Leigh Swart in 2011 and as a resident of Val de Vie, felt that it was time to start giving back to those in need. She felt that there was no better way than to form a non-profit organisation with like-minded women in the valley. The group is enthusiastic and committed to their objectives of helping others.
The Filly’s was born! By arranging and managing different types of charity events they raise money which they plough back into various community projects.
With the funds raised at last year’s casino evening and through a sponsorship by Regent Insurance they were able to raise the much needed funds to build a sustainable crèche in the Kayamandi Township. The school will be complete by the end of May 2013 and 20 pre-school children will be given much needed foundation skills development assistance each year.
They were also able to provide some funding to The Safe House in Stellenbosch (STOP) and The Horse and Cart Association respectively.
In addition Gregmel International donated boxes of baby vests, mountains of toys, clothing and food. These items were divided and then distributed to the Hospice, Bridges of Hope, Kathy’s Edu-Care Centre and The Rock Pregnancy Crises Centre in Paarl and this much needed support was well received.
To end off the year they even managed to assist The Rock with a further batch of baby bags and supplies for new mothers at the Centre.
These are some of the projects which benefit through the involvement of the Filly’s.
Each year the Filly’s also arrange a Christmas party for children with chronic diseases at the TC Newman Health Centre. The party is held for over 400 children that are in care of the clinic. On this day they provide each child with a special meal and gift to brighten their day.
A highlight on the calendar is their theme evening and this year they are hosting their second Casino evening with the theme Harlem Nights in the style of a 1920’s Cotton Club. This event offers an enticing, glamorous combination of dinner, dancing, jazz and gambling as well as a chance to win various sponsored lucky draw prizes!
The Casino evening will raise the much needed funds to support various charities in the Paarl and Franschhoek valley including the construction of an early childhood development centre for pre-school children in the Franschhoek / Paarl valley.
This year they aim to sustain Kayamandi crèche and build another school or place of safety within our valley.
Other charities that will also benefit from the Harlem Nights event this year include:
- The Rock Crises Centre in Paarl
- The Drakenstein Palliative Hospice and Franschhoek Hospice
- The Paarl and Wellington SPCA’s, and,
- Various other schools in the area
The Filly’s request is that we support their events. There is a great opportunity for Business to get involved through Sponsorships of whole events or element therof.
This is money well spent!
Please help the Filly’s to make a difference and contribute to those less fortunate.
