Interskole voted the biggest in SA
In a recent poll on School Sports News, the Paarl Interskole between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys High was voted the ‘biggest’ schoolboy derby in South Africa.
Over 2000 votes were cast with 10 derbies being listed. The Paarl Interskole Derby claimed 27% of the vote, just pipping the 23% of the Grahamstown ‘K-Day’ derby between Kingswood and St Andrew’s.
Interskole attracts the biggest crowd for any schoolboy rugby game in the world with numbers around the 30 000 mark attending the Faure Street derby that divides the town of Paarl into the blue of Boishaai or the green, maroon and Gold of Gim. Thousands of old boys and girls return to Paarl each year to celebrate this long standing rivalry with a host of traditions and events taking place at each school in the build-up to the big game on Saturday.
The entire week is something to behold, but nothing comes close to the atmosphere experienced at the Faure Street stadium on a Saturday afternoon. Even for the neutral supporter it is something to admire and with so much going on one might be forgiven for forgetting about the rugby for a second. The match itself is usually a fierce contest as both schools have for many years been among the top rugby playing schools on the country.
The Top 5 schoolboy derbies in SA:
1. Paarl Gimnasium v Paarl Boys High
2. Kingswood College v St Andrew’s College (K-Day)
3. KES v Jeppe
4. Bishops v Rondebosch
5. Hilton v Michaelhouse
Other derbies that are bubbling under the Top 5: Paul Roos v Grey Bloem; Dale v Queen’s; Affies v Pretoria Boys High; SACS v Wynberg; Union High v Volkskool; HTS Middelburg v Middelburg High.
