Dancing with the stars
My dance assessment with Phox Dance Academy
I have never been much of a dancer. When they were handing out rhythm I was somewhere at the back of the line and missed my share. The reason for my two left feet recently revealed itself at my cousin’s wedding. I suddenly had the misfortune of witnessing my parents breaking it down on the dance floor. It wasn’t pretty and honestly, when it comes to dancing, genetically I never stood a chance.
I have, however, somehow managed to survive 33-years with never really being able to move to the music.
In my defence I did sign up for an aerobics class at school and, despite my jumping to the left while everyone moved to the right, I even won an award – most improved member of the aerobics club. This really meant that the instructor felt sorry for me. I had simply progressed from totally completely useless to utterly useless. Being the only award I have ever received for any sporting achievement, I am still immensely proud.
I first had the pleasure of visiting Phox Dance Academy and meeting Roxy and Phil earlier this week. The studio is located in a beautiful old building in Textile Street and, once officially welcomed by Popcorn the dog, I felt totally at home. I was immediately struck by their warmth and friendliness. Right from the start it was evident that these two make dancing fun. We finished our chat and, much to my relief, my complete lack of rhythm had thus far gone unnoticed! Just when I thought all was safe, Phil suggested that I attend a Dance Assessment. I said to him that it really wasn’t necessary. I have accepted my lack of rhythm and, to be honest, it didn’t feel right to subject Phil to such extreme torture. This dancing dynamo would not be put off however. On Monday afternoon I once again found myself at Phox Dance Academy ready to be assessed…
I was a terrified sweating mess. No grace or composure anywhere to be found. More like the hippo from Fantasia, minus the tutu of course! Despite all this, and the fact that Phil’s toes might never be the same, I had a total blast! Phil is a dream of a teacher. With his tremendous skill, it really is a privilege to watch him dance. The man is super encouraging and endlessly patient. We covered the Foxtrot, Hustle and the Box Mamba and, while they might have only been the introductory steps, I felt like a pro.
Step aside Dancing with the Stars, here comes ShowMePaarl, and I’ll ShowYou how to move!
For anyone looking to blame it on the boogie I highly recommend a visit to Phox Dance Academy. Phox caters for all skill levels. They even offer an instructor course for those that really shine. I have been on a high ever since. I have even practiced my newly acquired moves at home. Granted my cat Sam, despite his best efforts, is no match for Phil when it comes to a dance partner!
Thank you Phox Dance Studio for helping me to overcome my fear of the dancefloor and for broadening my horizons. My dancing shoes and I will see you soon!
Phox offers both group (with weekly socials) and private dance lessons at very affordable rates.
