Enjoy the Great Outdoors around the town of Piet Retief near the Swaziland and northern Kwazulu Natal border. The area is very rural and beautiful, with forests, lakes, dams and mountains, and many locations with great hikes, walks and cycle trails.
The dams and lakes in the area as well as the Assegai River are well stocked with several species of yellowfish, bass, carp, barbel and eel. Hikes take you through forests and grasslands, past traditional villages and bushman rock art, and birding in the area is excellent, with many species of waterbird, waterfowl, eagles and almost every Southern African species of kingfisher found here in abundance.
