Challenging Task Awaits World Champion Springboks
As the much-anticipated Rugby World Cup in France approaches, the South African team faces a daunting task in picking their squad. Out of the triumphant 33 players who secured victory in Japan four years ago, a total of 26 remain in contention for spots in the upcoming tournament, set to kick off on September 8.
It is expected that at least 24 of the seasoned veterans will secure their positions in the 2023 squad, with the official announcement scheduled to take place at a TV studio in Johannesburg on Tuesday. However, there are two players who might miss out on this opportunity – the scrum-halves Herschel Jantjies and Cobus Reinach, who were second and third choices respectively, behind the exceptional Faf de Klerk during the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
South Africa’s head coach, Jacques Nienaber, openly acknowledges the difficulty of the impending squad selection. Having provided 38 players with opportunities to play in four games, the coaching staff faces the arduous task of making tough decisions to finalize the lineup.
Presently, there are 42 strong contenders vying for the coveted positions. Regrettably, some key players, including the inspirational captain and flanker Siya Kolisi, star fly-half Handre Pollard, and prop Ox Nche, have been sidelined due to injuries and have yet to make their appearances this season.
Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as insiders report that Siya Kolisi’s recovery is progressing well, increasing the likelihood of his participation in the warm-up matches against Wales in Cardiff on August 19 and New Zealand in London six days later.
