SPEAR acknowledges the value of integrated protection efforts across the Crocodile river

During a ceremony with SPEAR NPO, at the Odiweni Royal Residence, Queen Nombulelo Ngomane of KaHhoyi, Nkomazi, affirmed and demonstrated the commitment of the Ngomane tribe and KaHhoyi community to the SANParks cross boundary protection program.

The queen, together with her KaHoyi local resident and entrepreneur – Kate Repinga, both patrons of SPEAR NPO, invited some local leaders and a few children from nearby schools to attend the event. The Queen handed to Kruger National Park’s K9 Manager Johan de Beer purpose specific dog handler operational gloves, to be appropriated by the rangers deployed with dogs. These gloves have been bought with donations to the SPEAR NPO.

During the ceremony, Kruger National Park’s sector ranger Neels van Wyk reminded the audience that rhino syndicates progressively target and recruit local youngsters, with whom these hardened criminals have no family ties nor could care about their lives.

Integrated protection from inside and outside the Park is key to the success of combatting poaching. The eyes of a tractor driver on the land of the Ngomane’s – adjacent to Kruger, spotting strange presence of people across the Crocodile river, the whistleblowing of the compromising of a youngster in KaHoyi, add value to the protection program.

The K9 division’s role is indispensable. Dogs carry with them numbers of arrests. After the demonstration of the instilled skills of the trained dogs, handled by canine rangers Johan de Beer, Tiaan Potgieter and Alan Khoza of the Kruger National Park, Mr Louis Sibiya acting chair of the Lowveld Honarary rangers, closed the meeting expressing appreciation to the community, the Queen and the Repinga’s – for their involvement.

SPEAR (acronym for Stop Poaching our endangered African Rhinos) supports the NIG (Nkomazi Integrated Group) NPO by creating and maintaining an awareness of the protection syndication of the inside ranger teams within Kruger and the adjacent community’s collaboration and support. SPEAR NPO raises funds for the acquisition of purpose specific items used by the deployed forces in the protection of our endangered African rhinos across the borders into Kruger.
