Uplands First XI Cricket vs Rhodes University
The Uplands College 1st XI enjoyed a welcome break on Wednesday from the monotony of net practices when they went up against a touring side from Rhodes University. The match was played in good spirits and the Uplands boys went about their business in their usually clinical fashion, not distracted by the more laid-back approach of the students.
The tourists won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat first on a rock-hard surface. The Uplands bowlers were disciplined and were backed up by some sharp fielding to bundle the opposition out for 91. Gareth Park continued his rich vein of form snaring three victims for nine runs in 3.3 overs. Jason Bruce-Brand continued his resurgence to pick up 2 wickets, as did Cameron Jacobsz who was his deadly accurate self.
The Uplands top order made light work of the modest target, reaching it for the loss of one wicket with 25 balls to spare. Matt Nepgen flayed the bowling to all parts of the ground to race to 53 not out off 47 balls and newly promoted opener Keagan Du Preez played his anchor role with aplomb to end unbeaten on 20.
Uplands won the match by 9 wickets, but more importantly the boys got in some quality preparation for Saturday’s Super League fixture versus Hoërskool Middelburg. It is the 1st XI’s first home game of the season so get the braai and cooler box ready and come down and support the lads!
