SanParks Forums Cricket Tournament in Skukuza a big success.
Has anyone ever played cricket at Skukuza? It all started as an inquisitive question asked by a member of the popular SanParks web forum over ten years ago. Since then it has grown into a popular annual event on the SanParks calendar with just about 200 staff and members of the web forum participating in a cricket tournament at the Skukuza cricket club this year.
Over the past weekend members of the SanParks forum came from across as far as Ireland and Holland to compete with staff from Kruger National Park, Marakele, Mokala and even the SanParks head office in Groenkloof at the cricket oval in Skukuza’s staff village.
The tournament is a fantastic mix of social cricket, and some more serious cricket on Saturday, as the forum members who love the park get an opportunity to interact with the rangers and other staff that work so hard to make our parks the special places they are.
The scenic Skukuza Oval is exactly what you would expect it to be. Situated next to the Skukuza Golf Course that is famous for its free roaming wildlife, the well-kept grass of the field is not only enjoyed by the cricketers but also some baboons, warthog and lots of dung beetles who make their way across the field during the games.
There is a fantastic festive atmosphere at the tournament. Music, commentators and a rather vocal crowd means everyone feels like either Dale Steyn or AB de Villiers as they take to the field.
The tournament has also grown over the past couple of years to become a platform where staff from different parks gets to meet their associates from other park. Marakele National Park, Mokala National Park and the guys from the SanParks Head Office all travelled to Skukuza for the tournament this year.
If you love our national parks or cricket, get onto the SanParks forum and make sure you don’t miss out on the 2017 event.
