Nelspruit Eisteddfod 2018
Mbombela – Nelspruit Eisteddfod is a community society which has been serving the Lowveld for decades.
We believe that it’s about more than nurturing arts and culture in the next generation, and that the Nelspruit Eisteddfod provide opportunities for all participants to express and develop their talents, build self- confidence, assertiveness and perseverance.
We are excited that the annual event is well supported by schools and private affiliates in Nelspruit, White River, Karino, Hazyview, Sabie, Graskop, Malalane and even further afield with entries from Middleburg, Piet Retief and Pongola.
What is the Eisteddfod?
In simple terms an Eisteddfod can be described as a range of music, dance, drama and art “shows” for which anyone may enrol and where individual participants or groups are provided with feedback on their performances by experienced adjudicators in the relevant disciplines. The “rating” of the candidate is then expressed in different “levels” of awards (prestige, gold, silver and bronze) which indicates the participant’s progress in terms of his/her own knowledge, skill and understanding relevant to the particular item.
We have built a reputation for the high standard and integrity of the event which comprise Afrikaans Voordrag en Drama, Choirs, Dance, English Speech and Language, Music Vocal and Music Instrumental. Last year, we awarded close to 7000 certificates in these divisions collectively. As a community society we are dependent on the support of the community for our survival. We are thankful for the support we receive from Innibos, and other local businesses. We are very thankful for the development of a few scholarships that are awarded to deserving scholars with limited means in the dance division in particular.
The best performances in these divisions are sifted and the very best of those invited to participate in the annual Gala Evening. This year, the Gala Evening is scheduled for the 7th of September 2018. This event serves to showcase the talent and hope that is embodied in the Nelspruit Eisteddfod, as a platform for the survival of arts and culture through the next generation.
We accommodate participants from pre- school children to adults. The Eisteddfod is valuable to any participant. An important consideration in any project that seeks to develop interest in the arts is that it creates opportunities for participation and exposure from a young age. Someone growing up without any interaction or exposure to the arts and culture is very unlikely to value and appreciate these in adulthood.
