When Angie Bunyard took on the project of selling Greg Duffy’s 40-year-old collection of historical memorabilia, she had no idea what an interesting journey it would be.

Golden oldies“I placed an advertisement in a local newspaper and the response was not only overwhelming, it attracted a hugely diverse range of people from the lowveld, which I found very exciting,” she says.

The sale of the collection, which included pieces from the South African war, British coronation and World War II, was such a success that Angie decided the journey couldn’t stop there. She revamped Duffy’s museum, near Nelspruit, and opened a shop called Antiques and Artifacts.

She sources interesting pieces from around the globe, tastefully mixing memorabilia and antiques. “I try to buy what I love and would have in my home, and hope someone will love it too. If a client cannot find what they’re looking for, I’ll happily source it for them,” she says.

There are sections of brass and campaign memorabilia, sexy retro American bar stools (Angie’s favourite) and demure pieces of Edwardian furniture. You’ll find bits and pieces from India and koskasse (food containers) from France.

Old documents and long-playing record covers have been framed to become beautiful décor items, while lanterns from around the world pepper the ceilings and Persian carpets lend a touch of the exotic.

“I love the way eclectic pieces work together. Take an old distressed coffee table, pair it with a wicker chair, a fantastic piece of fabric on a scatter cushion and you’ve got an inspired new look,” Angie says.

Inspiration is not hard to come by and every piece is unique, most with an interesting tale to tell. Whether you’re a discerning home decorator or collectables junkie, chances are something will whisper: “Take me home.” – Jenny Chaplin © Lowveld Living magazine
