‘Original since 1997’

On a hot summer’s day in 1997, in the Mpumalanga Lowveld, Crocodile Sauce was born from a hot chilli paste made by a local avocado farmer’s wife. The flavour of chillies is delicious, providing a superior culinary experience.

A blend of chillies, spices, salt, vinegar and oil was created with a slight twist from East Africa … the addition of sherry! This twist was inspired by PiliPiliHoHo, a delicious condiment made by soaking chillies in sherry. The resulting mix was a tasty sauce which didn’t blow one’s head off.
One may wonder which part of the crocodile is added to the sauce which bears its name as well as the nearby river? It was decided that only the crocodile’s bite was needed and has been added ever since, thus making this a very crocodile friendly sauce.

Over the years, the sauce became more and more popular, as a general condiment and especially at braai’s. A local restaurant and a tourist establishment started to serve the sauce and its popularity has increased in leaps and bounds. As a result of very positive feedback, and even appreciation by a provincial rugby team,

Crocodile Sauce from the Lowveld has not only celebrated its 21st birthday, it is now being opened up to a much wider market of the chilli appreciating public, so the nation can add a new, delicious dimension to their culinary journey.
