Mafunyane Riverside Waterpark | A splash of Africa
Slide into Summer at Riverside Mall
The secret is out! Riverside Mall has heeded the numerous requests for a water park from locals and really has taken them to heart. “We are extremely proud to announce that we will be opening the new water park towards the end of December 2012”, says an excited Charmaine Von Abo, Riverside Mall’s centre manager. “This was a fantastic opportunity for Riverside Mall, especially when one keeps the Lowveld’s ideal climate in mind”.
It was imperative to remain true to the Lowveld and its surroundings in the planning of the park. As the Kruger National Park is only a stone throw away, it was decided that the bush, safari, and wild theme was the most appropriate for the water park. “As far as possible we tried to be consistent in the planning, decor, signage, naming etc, to carry the theme throughout each element,” continues Von Abo. When it came to the actual naming – a tremendous amount of thought went into it and the result is Mafunyane Riverside Water Park. For those who are not familiar with the name, Mafunyane is one of the Magnificent 7 in the Kruger Park. Mafunyane is a Shangaan word and translates to ‘the irritable one’. This name was given to the bull elephant that was famous for his gigantic tusks which measured 251cm (both left and right). Today can see his tusks in the elephant museum at Letaba camp.
The water park was scheduled to open earlier in December but due to the unseasonably heavy rain, completion of the park is slightly delayed. The water park will; however, be open in time for all to enjoy the long summer weather, as well as keep the kids entertained during the last part of the annual school holidays. Be sure to keep an eye on the mall’s Facebook page for the official launch date, as well as tune into MpowerFm to win entry tickets into the Mafunyane Riverside Water Park.
